Hybrid Electric Bicycles

A short list of electric motor bikes that make great alternatives to gasoline automobile for short distance commuting.

Because of the energy crisis, hybrid is the buzzword of the day. With respect to cars, hybrid usually refers to engines that use electricity and gasoline. The combination gets you more gas mileage. For example the 2008 Toyota Prius, a well-known hybrid car, gets 48 miles per gallon as oppose to a comparable non-hybrid car, say a Honda Civic, that gets 36 miles per gallon. By the way, Honda also has a hybrid version of the Civic and it gets 45 miles per gallon. The point is hybrid technology allows you to cover more grounds for a given set of resources, gasoline in this case.

In the cycling world, the term hybrid refers to bicycles with electric motors. Yep, that’s traditional push pedaling made easy with electricity. Instead of higher gas mileage, you get more miles pedaling and best yet, you don’t have to buy gas (because it’s a bicycle).

THE FRUGAL AND HEALTHY CONSUMER

But you’re asking why mention gas with bicycles? In the past, at least in the United States, gas prices were never a concern. Up until 2006 or so, Americans were able to buy gas for under $2.00 per gallon. That’s practically nothing! And times have changed since then.

In other parts of the world, however, they haven’t been so lucky. Europeans have been experiencing gas prices between $5-$8 per gallon for years. But they still get around. Common among their usual transport is a bicycle. You’ve seen many pictures of common folks getting around town bicycling. Kinda like what we did when we were kids. To get more “mileage”, a lot of Asians and Europeans use hybrid electric motor bikes.

Many smart and frugal Americans are discovering electric bicycles for short distance commuting to save money. They don’t have to pay for gas!

There is another advantage. Since you’re pedaling, you’re exercising. Makes you healthy. Of course, not everyone is in superb physical shape to be pedaling from one side of the city to the other. But remember, it’s a hybrid bike. The electric motor helps you pedal. Therefore you can get in shape slowly, but at the same time do so enjoying the outside.

The price of a hybrid bike may set you back from $500 to $1000 USD. But that should pay for itself within a year if you can save on $50-$70 a month on gas and/or $20-$30 on gym membership.

THE ECO-FRIENDLY CONSUMER

Just as important as saving money, there is a global trend, or at least in the US, to be more eco-friendly. Among others, gasoline is a concern. As you know, burning gasoline emits pollutants that are harmful to both the environment and our health. Transportation that uses less gas (hybrid cars) and no gas (electric car, hybrid bikes, electric scooters) are getting a lot of attention among consumers.

THE CHOICES OF HYBRID ELECTRIC BICYCLES

Though there are quite a few manufacturers of electric bicycles in existence, none of them are quite household names yet. But below are just a handful electric motor bike readily found from Amazon, eBay, Shop.com and other online retailers:

So unlike most electric bicycles, these components are not visually obtusive. The geared hub motor is a brushless DC type encased in an alloy shell. The battery pack is made of NiMH EV Rated Batteries Down Tube Concealed 24V / 9AH Pack (20) 1.2V Rechargeable Cells. There are men’s and women’s versions of the iZIP bike.

Since the battery is Lithium-ion, it can be recharged over 1,000 times, making it more durable than a typical NiMH battery and SLA (sealed lead acid) battery. Another plus is that Li-ion batteries are recyclable making this electric bike a truly eco-friendly.

Cycling – The Best Way to Get Around Commuter And Urban Bicycle Gear

Cycling – The Best Way to Get Around
By Paul Jorgensen

Most urban dwellers like myself have numerous options for how to get around. Many have their own cars, motorcycles, or scooters. And a lot of people take public transportation such as the bus, the subway, or tramlines. All of these are viable modes of transportation, but cycling has a number of special benefits that make it the best form of transportation.

One benefit of cycling is that you can get exercise. Exercising several times a week is essential for good long term health, but most people make excuses and ways to avoid exercising. Many people will buy a gym membership and stop going. Others will play sports but fail to schedule times with the other players. Many people go jogging but take a day off. Then the next day they take another day off. And the next day they take another off. The problem here is that these people intend to exercise, but they need to incorporate exercise into their routine so it is unavoidable and impossible to resist. Commuting to work by bicycle is the perfect way to incorporate exercise into your daily routine. Because there are no excuses. If you are tired after work, you still have to ride home. You can’t escape the exercise you have committed to.

Another reason to cycle around town is that it’s affordable. You don’t have to pay for gas, and in this day and age of high oil prices that is a huge benefit. You generally don’t have to pay for parking either. This depends on the city, but in many cities you can just lock up your bike on the strike or a bike rack for free. The key to affordability is to avoid having your bike stolen, so I recommend you invest in a good bike lock.

Another benefit of bike riding is flexibility. If you want to ride along the beach to work, you can. If you want to take a shortcut through a park or narrow lane, you can. You can walk your bicycle on the sidewalk. You can’t do those things with a car, and of course not on public transportation. Sometimes that variety and flexibility of taking whatever route you want can take some of the stress out of your daily commute.

I own a car because I like to take road trips and head up into the mountains. But when getting around the city, my bike is so much more convenient and enjoyable than all of the other transportation methods. So if you don’t have a bike, make sure to get one and start enjoying your commute.

Review : High quality and good for exercise
This scooter has been great for my family, well made, glides smoothly, and good handling. I bought one for my daughter (8 yr old) and she quickly picked up how to ride and has been taking it out daily ever since, really great exercise – I recently purchased another one for my wife so they could go cruising together and she’s loved it as well, I’m impressed how it’s versatile enough for a kid or an adult, the old Razor’s we had never really worked for anyone but the kids – with the full size deck and 2 stem sizes in the box though it is for both a small or tall rider.

Definitely worth the money and a good choice for a kick-scooter – I would recommend it to other parents or anyone who wants to make a long walking trip more fun.

Intensify Your Home Theater Experience With HDTV

Home theater is entertainment at home with a bit of excitement thrown in. It is basically a combination of video and audio equipment set up in your home in such a way that you feel you are actually sitting in a movie theater as opposed to in your own living room or family room. Contrary to popular belief, home theater does not have to run you into scores of big bucks. Instead it can be whatever you want to make it. A home theater can consist of as simple or as elaborate a system as you prefer. For example a 32-inch television set coupled with a DVD player and/or a HiFi VCR with a stereo and speakers can equal a home theater experience. Make it whatever you wish.

HDTV programming is gaining strength all of the time, in the form of broadcast, cable and satellite service. Home theater can intensify tremendously with HDTV. For example the audio that is part and parcel of HDTV video comes in surround sound. What this does is it takes complete advantage of the surround sound receiver of HDTV broadcasting.

Although a DVD (which stands for digital versatile disc) is not available in a high-resolution format, it displays what is known as a progressive scan signal. It is a progressive scan which makes the DVD player work to its optimum best. The majority of DVD players have the ability to give off progressive scanning and it is this function that gives the movie watcher an image that is clear, smooth and greatly resembles the quality of a film seen in a movie theater.

As well more and more DVD players in today’s electronics world have the capability of HD-up scaling. This up scaling takes high definition capacities of HD-compatible televisions to greater heights. In addition, DVD continues towards greater advancements. Blu-ray and HD-DVD are both forms of high definition DVD that are up and coming elements of HDTV. All of the benefits that HDTV has so richly to offer when it comes to details seen in visual images could go well beyond what the present technology of DVDs are, in particular in regards to projections on large screens.

In order to set up your own home theater to receive HDTV signals, you must first determine what particular sources are available in your area. HDTV can be obtained from three different sources. The first and most commonly accessible source is over-the-air (otherwise known as terrestrial) broadcasts that can be received by way of an aerial (or rooftop) antenna. In order to make use of this source of HDTV signals for your home theater you must live within a sixty-mile radius of the nearest transmitter and your property must have an unobstructed view for the signals to clearly come through.

HDTV signals can also be transmitted by satellite. This is the second most widely used source. Presently there are only two networks by way of satellite that broadcast HDTV. These are DirecTV and Dish Network. DirecTV offers the channels HBO, Showtime and HDNET, while Dish Network offers the Discovery channel, HBO, Showtime, a 24-hour pay-per-view channel, an HD demo channel and the national feed of CBS HD.

Cable is the third source of HDTV for home theater. Not all cable systems carry HDTV broadcasting as it varies from place to place. Keep in mind an important point, and that is that a “digital cable system” has no association whatsoever with DTV transmitted by way of cable. Digital cable is basically just regular cable that is digitally transmitted but with a multitude of other channels. The closest thing this could compare to is digital satellite. If you want to go this route it is important that you get in touch with your local cable company to find out if it is even possible to do so.

An HDTV tuner will be necessary for your home theater in order to do a variety of functions including grabbing, decoding and converting HDTV signals into a format that a television can recognize. An honest to goodness high-definition television has a tuner that is already built into the console of the set but this is not very common, as the technology for tuners has moved along swiftly and reduced in price much quicker than the technology for displays. The best thing to invest in is an HD monitor (which is a display minus an HDTV tuner) that can, if you like, be combined with a tuner any time you care to do so.

The very first step you need to take is to load the rear tires with liquid ballast. It’s best to get a valve stem adapter at a hardware store to get the liquid ballast into the tires.  This can be crucial because otherwise you’ll need to break the bead, and that’s just going to cause another mess to fix. Why should I choose an organic mattress?

“Green” your bedroom with an organic mattress!
Sleeping well is vital to good health. We spend a third of our lives sleeping, and an organic bed is an excellent way to ensure that, for at least 8 hours a day,

we are free from exposure to toxic chemicals so prevalent in products consumption today.

What is the difference between an organic mattress and mattress outlet?

Organic mattresses are based on natural components. Conventional mattresses are made primarily of synthetic materials derived from renewable resources like natural gas and petrochemicals. Furthermore, conventional mattresses, fire retardants and other chemicals used in fabric roof and filling. (OMI mattresses are made with naturally flame-resistant organic Eco-Wool, which keeps you safe without the use of chemical fire retardants).

What makes a organic bed?
It all begins with natural organic materials that are grown with sustainable farming methods. This type of agriculture maintains and enhances harmony ecological preserves precious resources, and holds soil in both the short and long term.

What are the natural materials used in the OMI organic mattresses?
They are built with a barbarity Eco-wool, cotton certified organic and 100% natural rubber latex – all renewable, biodegradable resource. These natural materials are grown, processed and manufactured without chemicals toxic.

No organic mattresses come in different firmnesses and have innersprings?
There are two main types of organic mattresses: rubber natural, which is essentially free of metal, and innerspring. Both styles are available with different firmness options.

How is an OMI organic mattress done?
The inner core is made of natural rubber latex or innersprings. The padding is Eco-wool and certified organic cotton battings, quilted between two layers of certified organic cotton fabric (ticking). The filling in our mattresses innerspring is simply certified organic cotton.

What Where the raw materials come from?
OMI is committed philosophically to the organic movement and support American organic farmers. The Eco-wool is sheared from sheep free-grazing of California, and processed under strict controls to minimize any chemical contamination or animal cruelty.

100% cotton is certified organic. It is grown and processed without chemical pesticides, herbicides, fungicides or fertilizers. Natural rubber latex (milk rubber tree) is 100% natural and produced by the only manufacturer of Talalay latex in the U.S..

Why are these raw materials used in an organic mattress? Wool is warm in winter and cool in summer. It absorbs perspiration, which then evaporates, regulating body temperature of the person to sleep through the night in a more restful sleep. Wool is also resistant, durable, and flame resistant. Cotton is comfortable and durable, and natural selection on a mattress stuffing. certified organic cotton is healthier for the soil, water, ecosystem, agricultural workers, you and his family.

Natural rubber provides a natural sleep environment strong and healthy. It offers comfort and support to a deeper, deeper sleep. A mattress made with natural rubber eliminates 85% of the transfer movement of a restless partner and rarely needs flipping. It is naturally antimicrobial and mite dust resistant – an excellent choice for allergy sufferers.

What is the difference between natural rubber latex and latex used in other mattresses? All latex are not equal. natural rubber latex is produced by an environmentally friendly process for a renewable natural resource and is biodegradable. Compare this process with styrene-butadiene (Artificial) of latex products made from non-renewable petrochemical resources. Memory or memory foam is derived from plastics.

Our 100% natural (not blended) Rubber instantly adjusts to individual body contours with a maximum pressure relief more than 33% synthetic latex foam. That means a better night’s sleep.

Our organic mattresses are Talalay latex made – the best available, more consistent, more durable and latex in the world. Our natural rubber latex is 100% natural, not a mixture of natural resources and synthetic latex.

If organic mattresses have flame retardant materials are safe from fire? mattresses IMO have been tested in an independent testing laboratory. They are both federal and California open-flame standards without the use of flame retardant chemicals, presumably health and environmental hazards.

Can a new organic mattress is placed in an old foundation or box spring? A foundation is helping a mattress and the use of an old foundation or box spring under a mattress springs affect the comfort of the mattress and shorten its life. Our natural rubber mattresses are designed to be placed in a plywood base. If you have a slatted platform bed designed for a single mattress, you would not need a foundation for this mattress.

How long will my organic mattress last? Our mattresses are backed by a limited warranty in the industry leader 20.

What sizes do organic mattresses come in? From the cradle to the eastern king or California, our organic mattresses made in all conventional sizes and even custom sizes.
